How the La Liga table is decided
The La Liga table works on three points for a win and one for a draw across 38 rounds. Spain breaks ties differently from England: when clubs are level on points, the matches between them decide the order before overall goal difference is counted.
So if Sevilla and Villarreal finish level and Sevilla won both meetings, Sevilla finishes higher even with a worse goal difference. Early in the season, before clubs have met twice, overall goal difference does the work on this table.
That head-to-head rule is why a single derby can be worth more than three points in Spain.
Zones
La Liga places for Europe and relegation
La Liga places near the top lead into the Champions League, the Europa League and the Conference League. The coloured edge on each row follows the league’s own notes for the season, so the colours tell you where each position currently leads.
Three clubs go down. Promoted sides often spend the season close to that line, and the GD column shows how many goals separate the clubs around 17th and 18th.
